Week 3 - Shooting Star Back 9
Week 3 will be at Shooting Star in Wyoming at the base of Jackson hole nestled in a valley below the Tetons. The difficulty of the course was tempered by selecting a rather generous tee measuring around 3100 yards and the aid of thin mountain air. Make sure you hit a few test shots as you will get a club or more difference on mid irons, even more with fairway woods and driver and about half of a club on wedges. Daunting water is usually positioned on one side of the hole while the other is a bail out that will increase the difficulty of your approach. The pins are not easy, and you better be make sure you miss to the correct side or you will have a frustrating day of chipping. Watch the preview below.
Note: Pins in the tournament round will be different than the video. |

The Podium Discussion
Showing remarkable consistency, The Mulligan Masters followed up a 58 point week 1 with a 60 point week 2 to take the victory. Leading the way were Craig Dickey (8 HCP), Blake Doran (4 HCP) and Jake Valles (5 HCP) who scored 22, 20 and 18 pts shooting adjusted scores of 38, 37 and 40 respectively. A point of concern for the Masters is the other two scores for the team were only 11 and 6 points leaving little cushion however both low scorers will benefit from additional strokes in Week 3 while the top 3 will have minor adjustments only.
The high octane BC United team showed tremendous power with all 5 players over 17 points. Craig Scott (1 HCP) and Tim Oates (1 HCP) lead the way with 20 points each and Jason Inmon (2 HCP) followed with 19 pts. With solid scores across the board, BC United could be very dangerous for weeks 3 and 4, however BC United will have the least added to their team handicap so they need to go low again to keep their place at the top of the leader board.
The Back Nine Bandits had another solid showing sharing 3rd with 58 points. Carding 4 players over 18 points this is another team that is solid throughout. Lead by Cody Green (9 HCP) and Travis Morgan (5 HCP) earring 21 and 19 pts on 39 and 41 with both Peter Perkins (0 HCP) and Marques Green (7 HCP) scoring 18 pts with a 73 and 41. This is another strong team that looks to be fixed at the top of the standings.
Finally Civil Goat CC landed on the podium sharing 3rd with BNB. Lead by two strong scores of 22 and 20 from Craig Dickey (8 HCP) and Blake Doran (4 HCP) on 38 and 37, CGCC Added a 17 from Chris Rupke (8 HCP) firing a 43. Civil Goat Captain Chris O’Brien also carded 16 points so the Goats have 4 solid at the top.
The Rest of the Field
SpOakes was just a few points off the podium with 55 showing great overall consistency with two 19’s and two 17’s. They will have to play well again only receiving 17 more towards their team handicap.
Dad Bods, Hard Shanks, Jack Aces and Bogeys y Borrachos all need to step it up in Week 3 but will all benefit from significant handicap adjustment. An avalanche of net birdies is in the forecast for the bottom 4.
Scoring Analysis / Handicap
We are working hard to create a fair, level playing field for all. However, if there is one impossibility in this world, it is having high, mid and low handicap players happy with their handicaps in the same event. Week 1 the HCP’s were too high and resulted in a significant advantage to the high handicap players who were able to make birdies with double bogey’s. Week 2 handicaps were calculated using 50% of the adjusted score from week 1 with a max of 32 trying to limit 2 and 3 pop holes. This favored the mid handicap player based on our analysis of scores. Now with 2 competition rounds we are confident that weeks 3 and 4 will have the best handicap representation across the board using adjusted scores from week 1 and 2.
Week 1 we had a high team score of 74 and low of 37 (37 points separating the two) and Week 2 we had a high of 60 with low of 43, only 17 points separating first and last with a much more even distribution of scores which is what we want.
Week 3 handicaps are very simply the total adjusted (double bogey max) score from weeks 1 and 2 minus 72. So if you shot 40 and 42 adjusted, your handicap for week 3 will be 82 - 72 = 10. That is the 18 hole HCP. If you are a 10 you will probably get 5 or 6 pops on 9 holes. Week 4 handicaps will factor in all 3 rounds.
